Abstract

Bhutan, a landlocked Himalayan kingdom, shows a unique food culture deeply rooted in spiritual beliefs, traditional rituals, and profound environmental respect. This holistic approach, central to its development philosophy of Gross National Happiness (GNH), positions food beyond mere sustenance, making it integral to preserving cultural heritage, agricultural biodiversity, and ecological integrity. This article explores the symbiotic relationship between Bhutanese food culture, its embedded rituals, and the nation's commitment to sustainable agroecologically inclined agricultural practices. It highlights how these elements contribute to the conservation of traditional knowledge and genetic resources, focusing on the significance of rice, ethnobotanical knowledge, and the integration of food-related rituals into national policies. This paper discusses government policies like organic farming and climate-resilient adaptations that underpin these traditions, and instances where ceremonies exemplify cultural practices to preserve food items like rice, fruits, and tea, connecting them to community well-being and spiritual and ritual practices preserving food items and connecting them to traditional conservation practices. Ultimately, Bhutan's unique pathway showcases an integrated approach to food security and environmental stewardship. Further, this desktop review offers a deeper and wider understanding of how Bhutan's food systems are intricately woven into its socio-cultural fabric. This unique integration significantly influences the nation's pursuit of sustainable development, particularly within the context of Bhutan’s vision for developing the Gelephu Mindfulness City (GMC).
