Dr. Kuenzang Tshering (PhD)

Environmental Scientist

Dr. Kuenzang Tshering is an environmental scientist with extensive expertise in water resource management and hydrogeological investigations. He currently working as an Environmental Officer at the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation (DWER) in Western Australia, where he leads scientific investigations and manages projects focused on water allocation and planning. His work integrates advanced climate science, hydrological modelling, and cross-sector collaboration to develop long-term strategies for water resilience and sustainability across the state.

Previously, Dr. Tshering worked as an Environmental Consultant with SLR Consulting, a global environmental firm. There, he managed complex projects involving hydrogeological assessments, water quality compliance, and contaminated site investigations for clients across diverse industries.

His doctoral research at Edith Cowan University, funded by a research and development grant from Water Corporation, explored the impacts of bushfire risk on drinking water catchments in the Perth metropolitan area. His work produced novel insights by identifying fire-derived contaminants and assessing their implications for water quality resilience under extreme climatic events. Dr. Tshering has also held key roles in Bhutan, including with the Bhutan Trust Fund for Environmental Conservation, where he collaborated with multilateral organizations such as the World Bank, Global Environment Facility, Adaptation Fund, and the Green Climate Fund. He represented Bhutan at the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD), working on transboundary water and ecosystem management initiatives across the Hindu Kush Himalayan region.

An active researcher and contributor to global environmental knowledge, Dr. Tshering has published in high-impact journals including Water Research, Ecological Indicators, and Global Change Biology, as well as book chapters on climate change and community resilience. His academic and professional work reflects a strong commitment to advancing environmental sustainability, bridging science and policy, and delivering innovative solutions to water and climate challenges.

As a personal initiative, he leads an informal network of water researchers from Bhutan through www.waterresearchbhutan.org , contributing frequent articles to Bhutan’s national newspaper to disseminate recent scientific developments in water science and highlight their relevance to Bhutan’s environmental context.
